Papermaking with Plants
Artist, author and instructor Helen Hiebert has spent more than 10 creative years in Portland, exploring paper and the two- and three-dimensional art it can become. In this hands-on introductory workshop, we'll process common plant materials, from the surprising to the mundane, cooking and beating them to prepare pulp for papermaking. Each participant will learn eastern and western sheetforming techniques and will make several sheets of paper. Find out for yourself the many fascinating fibers behind something so taken for granted! Materials are included in the price.

Birds, Bees and Butterflies
Learn how to mix Pacific Northwest native plants into your garden for new dimensions of beauty and benefits from birds, bees and butterflies. This Metro Natural Gardening program includes a visual presentation, discussion, hands-on learning and free publications for all participants. Discover a balance of plants that provide nectar and pollen for bees and butterflies and food for other insects as well. Native plants that fruit are especially nice for birds and tend to attract a variety of native wildlife.

Naturescaping Basics
When you garden with native plants, natural landscapes, and water-friendly gardening, you need less water, fewer chemicals, and less time doing maintenance. This is good for you, your garden, beneficial to wildlife and the environment. You'll receive a free workbook and native plant to take home. Rain or shine, we'll be going outside to study plants along BBG's Native Plant Trail.
A free class offered by the EMSWCD and hosted by BBG. Go to http://www.emswcd.org/workshops-events to register.

The Art of Kusamono
Kusamono is a jewel of composition in the spirit of bonsai, using grasses and perennials in a harmonizing container. The colors may be muted or bold, the form wild or mild. We will begin by discussing color and form and the practicalities of media and care. You may then create a desert or bog scene or let your imagination roam free. Bring your own special container or purchase a tray. Plants will be available for purchase.

Alpine
Trough Construction
Troughs are ideal for small space gardening or for those who want
a few alpines without a ton of rocks. Whether you're new to rock
gardening and troughs or an "old hand," you'll enjoy the camaraderie
and cement-mixing efforts of a group. Please bring a box no larger
than 12x18 in, and a pair of rubber gloves. Dress for the weather
- the class takes place outdoors, under cover. This is a great class to take again and again -
a fun, social way to add another trough to your garden while letting
us deal with the mess!
